The Victorians and the Anglo-Florentines:
a cultural weekend at Casa Guidi, the historic home of Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning

A special weekend was held at the Brownings’ home, ‘Casa Guidi’, in Florence from 17-18 April 2010. This cultural weekend allowed visitors to discuss ‘The Victorians and the Anglo-Florentines’, amongst which group the Brownings were prominent members. On Saturday April 17 Gigliola Sacerdoti Mariani and Antonello La Vergata discussed, ‘Il vittorianesimo’, a collection of essays edited by Franco Marucci (who was also present). The collection analyses the complex and many-sided aspects of Victorianism. On the Sunday, Sirpa Salenius, who has published a range of material on the Anglo-Florentines, led two guided tours of Casa Guidi, particularly focusing on the American artists and authors who were entertained by the Brownings at Casa Guidi.
